Unsettling Object Encounters: Posthuman Pedagogies for Different Educational Futures

Unsettling Object Encounters: Posthuman Pedagogies for Different Educational Futures

I have been engaging with the question of ‘what can objects do?’ for a number of years (Taylor, 2013; 2017). In this presentation I consider the work that objects can do in provoking unsettling encounters – encounters which encourage us to engage with culture, history and our own biographies in different ways and which unsettle fixed opinions, sedimented values and business-as-usual. I take a posthumanist/new material feminist theoretical approach to consider a number of object encounters which jolt us out of our humanist presumptions that consign objects to the ‘background’ and which ensure that object lives usually go unnoticed and ignored by humans obsessed by their own busyness. I use examples of historical statues, public art objects and mundane things to consider (a) the public pedagogy of objects; and (b) the work of objects in educational assemblages. I ponder how unsettling object encounters can help helps us imagine, think and do higher education research and pedagogy differently and open up possibilities for different educational futures, infused by an affirmative sense of ecological relationality and a greater awareness of co-dependence which refuses the atomization of competitive individualism.
