This is the permanent website of the International Conference on the History of Mathematics Education (ICHME). Here you find information about previous conferences, proceedings and the up-coming conference.
About ICHME
The conference is dedicated to fostering research and scholarly exchange concerning the history of mathematics education. All types of studies that contribute with new knowledge about teaching and learning mathematics in past times are welcomed.
The recurring title of the conference proceeding is “Dig where you stand”. It reflects the spirit of the conference. The origin of this expression is the title of a book by the Swedish author and scholar Sven Lindqvist (1932–2019) who was an international leading figure in the labour history movement. A key idea in this movement was that workers themselves should study their history in a proper way, not least to contribute to their independence in relation to companies, but also academic researchers. The starting point should then be the history of their workplace – where they stood. This idea is transposed to the context of mathematics education.
